Ancient Greece-Religion, Folklore, Philosophy



  • ●  What system of belief did the ancient Greeks have?  Rituals a religious ceremony made up of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order  and mythology a collection of myths, especially one belonging to a particular religious or cultural tradition.

  • ●  Who were their primary gods and goddesses? (Describe and explain)
  • Zeus sky and thunder god. Hera goddess of women, marriage, family and childbirth. Poseidon  god of the Sea and other waters, earthquakes, horses. Demeter goddess of the harvest and agriculture. Athena goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Apollo god of music, truth and prophecy, healing, the sun and light, plague, poetry. Artemis goddess of the huntwild animalswildernesschildbirthvirginity and protector of young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women. Ares god of war. Aphrodite goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation.  Hephaestus god of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges and the art of sculpture. Hermes  the emissary and messenger of the gods. Hestia goddess of the hearth, architecture, and the right ordering of domesticity, the family, the home, and the state. Dionysus god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy.

    explain) Sacrifices, drama presentations, plays, athletic competitions, and concerts.  

  • ●  Which ancient Greek legend did you find the most interesting? King Midas and the golden touch. Why? Because I think it has a great moral.

  • ●  What beliefs did the ancient Greeks have about the afterlife? They believed things like  Thanatos, the God of Death, would reach down and cut a lock of hair from your head, as you died. And Hermes, the messenger of the gods, led you to the River Styx. Also if your body had been buried, then Charon, the ferryman, transported you across the river.

    explain) Do all religions have a belief in an afterlife? No 

  • ●  How is ancient Greek religion different from Christianity? They believe in many gods

  • ●  What were the original Olympic games like? They were a lot like the olympic games today. How were they different than the 
    Olympic games today? They had events like
    • Boxing.
    • Equestrian events. Chariot racing. Riding.
    • Pankration.
    • Pentathlon. Discus. Javelin. Jump. Running. Wrestling.
    • Running.
    • Wrestling.
     We have events like
